Birthstones for August, and gemstones to be given as a celebration of 16 years of marriage, peridot has been called the "extreme gem" by GIA, due to the fact that it is the one of only two gems (diamond being the other) tobe formed not the Earth's crust, but in molten rock and brought to the surface by the tremendous forces of earthquakes and volcanoes. Peridots can also be found in rare pallasite meteorites formed some 4.5 billion years ago, remnants of our solar system’s birth.
